Artistic Statement

As an artist I swing back and forth between choreographing pure Bharatanatyam dance and creating innovative fusion dances. Even while using traditional techniques, I aim to utilize Bharatanatyam in a contemporary context to showcase how a seemingly archaic art form can be brought into the 21st century to address socially prominent women’s issues such as sexual harassment, bodily autonomy, and healthcare decisions. I also transform traditional pieces from Hindu mythology into performances that prioritize feminism. I enjoy exploring new ways to blend styles, and I aspire to create fusion dance by combining elements of South Asian and Western dance into multicultural performances that accurately reflect the bicultural identity of second generation children of immigrants.
